Varadero Airport Overview
Varadero Airport is the second largest airport in Cuba after Jose Marti Airport in Havana.
It serves both international and local flights. It is 140km from the capital Havana. Located in the province of Matanzas, Varadero Airport receives direct flights from Canada, Europe, Central America, Africa and South America. It serves the second most important tourist destination on the island after Havana.
The airport is a 15 minutes drive to the centre of Varadero. You can access Varadero City from the airport using several modes of transport. There are shuttle buses operating from Varadero Airport to the city. Outside the terminal building you will find taxi ranks where you can hire a taxi to the city centre. Alternatively, you have the option of renting a car and using it to drive to and around the city. Rent a car services can be obtained at Varadero Airport.
Buses generally charge 5CUC for a day’s service. Once you have purchased the ticket you can use it as much as you wish for the rest of the day. Taxis will generally charge between 25CUC and 30CUC to get you from Varadero Airport to the city centre. Rental vehicles have different rates depending on the vehicle selected.
Being a medium sized airport, Varadero Airport has limited facilities to offer. It contains a duty free shop where you can purchase a few souvenir items as you go back home. There is also a government departure tax of 25CUC which you have to bear in mind as you plan your trip to Varadero Cuba.
